Intro

 Hello,

My name is Elijah (or Eli) and I use they/them pronouns. I am taking this class as one of my last two courses for a B.A. in Psychology with a concentration in Art Therapy. I work full time as a Psychiatric Behavior Specialist, providing clinical supports for intensive residential programs serving adults with severe psychiatric conditions (mostly schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders). After I get my diploma at the end of this summer, I plan to apply for graduate programs in Art Therapy, Social Work, and Mental Health Counseling so that I can continue working towards becoming a licensed clinician. I struggle to find time and energy for artistic pursuits because of how demanding my job is, but I enjoy drawing, painting, ceramics, and playing violin or ukulele when I can make space for it. I look forward to one of my last undergrad courses being something that utilizes the artistic parts of my brain rather than the parts that I use for work. I am using an iPhone 13 mini to take my photos for this class, which is what my selfie was taken with (pardon the car selfie, I spend too much time in the car!).

I’m taking this course for electives to finish up a credit requirement in my degree. Bio

Hello class. My name is Tiffany Chiles from New Haven, Ct. I will be graduating this year with a Bachelor's degree. When not focusing on school, I like to read, shop and spend time with my loved ones. I love to take pictures, even know I need to be more professional. This class taught me to take better pictures and learn different ways to create them from a different view.

Giovanni and Lilly

My name is Giovanni Roman. I am taking the course because I wanted to take classes for the summer, many of the classes are set for online so it had taken me some time to find a class that I would enjoy and learn from. I came across this course it which I had never heard of it before so, I believe that I would learn so much from it and hopefully I would enjoy it too. Anyway, let me tell you more about me, I have been married for 21 years and I have 5 children and one granddaughter, she is 4 years old now. I have been living in CT for 11 years before that I was living in NC because I was in the Marines. I was in the Marine for 8 years; it was the best time of my life I wanted to stay in for 20 years, but things are always changing.

Bio of a Mitchell Student

My name is William Dreier. I am currently in my Junior Year at Mitchell College. I am enrolled in Digital Photography II with Albertus Magnus College this summer, as a Mitchell College Acadeum Online Course. The reason I chose to do Digital Photography virtually from home is because I have always dreamed of entering the world of animation/entertainment, and I feel like Digital Photography might be the best place to start for me. The project that I hope to work on this summer involves taking ordinary photos like this:

And making them look more painting-like, like this:

I really look forward to seeing what this class has to offer and how it can help me improve upon my current skills in the world of art!

Thanks so much, sending you all the best,

Will Dreier

Hi everyone! My name is Jessie Schreck. I am taking classes at Albertus Magnus to finish my bachelors degree in Sociology. It is my hope to one day (soon) become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) to help counsel and support those in need. My main job is being a mother to my two daughters ages 7 and 10 with the help of my husband. I look forward to this Mod because I have never taken a photography class as I am sure you can tell by my awkward selfie!

Bio

Hello everyone,

My name is Gretchen Guadalupe. I currently work for the State of CT Department of Labor. I am a mother of two (4-year-old and 23-year-old) and a wife. My goal is to obtain my bachelor’s degree in business management to help enhance my leadership and management skills. Having an advanced education will allow me to help others while also being able to help provide for my family. To me a higher education means you have more choices in life and chances to make a difference in your community. I always had a passion for success. Completion of this study at Albertus Magnus College will allow me to achieve my personal and professional goals without compromising my life's responsibilities. I am really looking forward to this class as I truly enjoy taking photos!!! Most are from my family especially my daughter.

Best wishes to all...

Gretchen

Checklist for the first week....

It is very important to complete each item on this checklist in the first week or you will find that you are falling behind rather quickly.

Some details:

No book is needed for the class.  Everything you need is linked from the blog and in the syllabus: https://mod52023.blogspot.com/

This is an Asychronous online class.  You will work independently using the materials and videos I provide.

You need a decent PC or Mac with a decent broadband internet connection.  You should have space on your hard drive.  If not, then you can do this class from any public computer at Albertus.

You need to join the class blog as that is the classroom.  I have a how to blog video linked in the upper right hand side of the front page.

If you have ever posted to Facebook or to eLearning, you will see this is just as easy but Important!  You have to join the blog to post.  To do that, click on the link in the email blogger sent you yesterday and sign in using your Albertus login.

If you have everything up and running in the first week, you will succeed in the class.  Things to do:

-Join the blog

-1st post of a short bio, hello and selfie to the blog

-Download Photoshop and install it

-Create a Google Drive folder and share it with me (see link list)

-Begin shooting geometric compositions of light and line and angles using architecture up close. (fill the frame)

Your instruction is through the videos I have created.

Hope that helps,

Prof. Nevins

5 Assignments in 5 weeks, 50 images each, edited to 6-10 each

Here is a distillation of all of the assignments in the syllabus in one place.  As you go out shooting, (or in shooting in your home) you may work ahead and backwards as time progresses...

Create a Google Drive folder and share it with me. (Drive.Google.com) Put your name on the folder and Mod 5, 2023 Once you click on the folder, right click on it and then click "share", enter jnevins@albertus.edu, then send.

1. Introduction to Composition, shoot in a built environment using geometry, lines, angles, etc. to fill the frame to make interesting designs or compositions.  Pay particular attention to how light is working and where the focal point is..

2. Water, nature, not built environment.  Reflections, patterns, textures, light, light, light.. water in and form... running, still, frozen, fluid, etc.

3. Light and Shadow... Find patterns of shadow and light.  Relate this back to the first assignment, ie, fill the frame, make an interesting design.  Look around your house, in the street, downtown, etc... tree shadows on snow or pavement can be good... it is harder to work in nature though.

4. Macro... move in and fill the frame with tiny objects... Remember to pay attention to light again... move in close, fill the frame.

5. Window light portrait.  Take someone or a pet by a window.  Put your shoulder against the same wall the window is on.  Turn the face toward the light.  Hold the camera vertically.  Crop in to the top of the head.  Put more space in front of the face, in other words, don't center the head in the frame.

All of the above images were taken by my Intro to Photography (Digital Photography) students.

All work submitted should be new work and not pulled from your vacation trip last year! EXIF information is tagged on your photos so I know when you shot everything... :)

Welcome to Digital Photography Class!

Welcome to Digital Photography!  Take a moment to watch the how to post to the blog video linked above.  It is important that you respond to the email blogger sent you in order to join the blog.  Only members can post and comment here. Class runs from May 30th - July 6th, 2023.

Once you get going, you will see that it is easy and intuitive... and so much nicer looking than the eLearning shell.  Albertus is a Google Apps for Education campus, and Blogger is one of the apps available to you.

For the first week, I want you to get up and running and post a bio with a photo here.  Please state what camera you will be using.  If a phone, state the model. Download and install Photoshop using your Albertus credentials.  (link above). You should have either a Windows pc or laptop or a Mac desktop or laptop.  A chrome book can't run Photoshop.  If that's what you have, then you'll need to work on your phone to edit your phone cam pictures and upload to the blog from your phone... Another possibility is that you could receive a remote login to an Albertus computer with Photoshop and run it from your Chromebook.

Read through the assignments in the syllabus.  Use Google images to get ideas for your work.  The first assignment, Introduction to Composition asks you to think about finding geometry in your compositions using the built environment (not nature)  Here is a good short tutorial on the subject.

This is a workshop class.  To succeed, you need to save 6-10 of your best pieces, edited in Photoshop for light and focal point each week in your Google Drive folder that is shared with me.   Post 2 or so of them here on the blog.  I take attendance each Monday morning from work posted here on the blog. If you don't post one week, then there will be two absences recorded.  At 4 absences, the college will withdraw you from the class.

You need to shoot about 50 new images for each assignment.  Edit these down to your best 6-10 to put in a sub folder labeled Assignment 1, Assignment 2, etc.  This is on your Google Drive folder.

I comment on each and every post.  This serves as your feedback.  I want you to have fun with this class.  Looking forward to working with you!
