Jessie Schreck: Week 2 - Introduction to Composition

I have included three of my favorite photos from this unit, captured in the "built environment". I attempted to photograph pieces of the urban landscape and showcase them best through emphasizing contrast, light, and shadow.

Blue Tile: Taken on a sunny day in New Haven, CT, an interesting, bright blue wall adjacent to a shadow producing overhang. I enjoyed the various textures present, the parallel and perpendicular patterns, and the contrast between light and dark coupled with a nice blue focal wall.

Locked Out: I found this eerie message at an abandoned catholic school for "boys in need of care", called Mt. Saint John in Deep River, CT. I loved how the vegetation was attempting to reclaim the structure, and in the hazy sunlight present that day, I needed to increase the contrast to really get the leaves to stand out as a point of focus.

Gate: A classic wrought iron gate in the morning sun against a brick wall. I tried to saturate the background to bring out the vibrancy of the red against the black of the metal and shadows.
